How do you respond when a person say's, "you are so young" when you really are not? I am 35. Is it a compliment? I had this said to me two different times recently and decided to google it and I found very little information. I figured I'll post it here and see what happens.
I guess it depends on why they said it. Like, did you say "I think I have dementia" or "oh man, I'm so old, my life is over, guess I'm gonna die any day now" and they said "you are so young"? To many people, 35 *is* still young.
I'm not sure what about this is distressing you so much... I would think you're at the age when most people are beginning to want to still be described as "young"?

I did think 35 might still be young, but both doctors that told me this also look young. I was not sure if it was a compliment, it is not distressing me, it just happened recently at two different locations. Do I say thank you? In both situations when it took place I said nothing back, I was not sure how to respond to that statement.

Whether it's a compliment really depends on context. Since we weren't privy to your conversations we don't know.
There must have been some sort of implication, based on additional information these people had
- you're so young to have these kinds of health problems?
- you're so young to have such a wealth of knowledge about such and such a topic?
- you're so young to already own your own business?
- you're so young to be the parent of four children?

Maybe those doctors didn't meant that you LOOK young but that your body is young, so any improvement of whatever issue you have is still possible.
So, it was a matter of fact not a compliment.
If you don't understand what your doctor's meant, you should ask them. It could be important.

You're overthinking it, 35 IS fairly young. It's not the 20's, but at least it still has a "3" in it. As long as the tone wasn't condescending, don't take it in a bad way. Would you rather look too old for your age?

+1
As Freud famously said to a woman who wondered if her dreams about cigars were actually dreams about phallic issues, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".
Yes, the OP is overthinking the situation.
