It's a disease in the sense that, like herpes, you can treat the symptoms, but the disease itself will never go away. It's called a disease to remind people who are alcoholics that no matter how long they have abstained, the can reactivate the "disease" by drinking again, and how their alcoholism can spread and take over their lives.
You are also aware that alcoholism is genetic, so it has a biological component, right?
Actually, yes, there is an alcoholic in our wife's family, so we're aware of that. According to Lance Dodus, Professor of Psychology at Harvard, there is no gene for alcoholism. But is it nature or nurture? And if it really is strictly genetic, then why hasn't medical science really looked for a cure?

The field of medicine is meant to help others gain control over their lives through the eradication or minimization of disorders. If talking to "a bunch of strangers" (which by the way, everyone is a stranger when you first meet them, do you NEVER make any new friends? Also, they may be strangers the first time they go, but when they keep going back to the same meetings, they get to really know those people and they become friends) is therapeutic, then yes, it meets the definition of "medicine".
Scientific = being able to duplicate the same results. Many who go to AA are able to abstain. The same results are duplicated.
