Hey there,

I am an Egyptian who recently moved to Port Charlotte, FL and finally married my long-time-long-distance sweetheart. I have been here for about 9 months. I love the area and the weather is nice (except for the humidity part lol).

I am finally legally allowed to work, and I would like some tips on where to start searching for 'decent' jobs that meet my qualifications. I have a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I speak 3 languages fluently. I worked as a Translator during college and after I graduated for about 3 years. I would LOVE to get a job in the same field, but have been looking with no luck... I do not mind doing a different kind of job, if it comes down to it.. But, I still would like to get a job that meets my qualifications and interests... I am fairly young and have a passion for life and achieving my goals.. I feel like the 'vacation' part of my move here in the US is over and I am SO ready to start looking for a job again and resume my career..

Being new to the country and the state..I feel like trying to find my way in the dark.. I would appreciate any suggestion or tip on where I can find jobs, and any nice classes, trainings, conferences around town... Anything related or unrelated would still help!

Thanks in advance!

Ameriptian

Port Charlotte is usually discussed in the Sarasota area forum. Any type of job is going to be very hard to find in this area right now, though. Craigslist has a lot of good ads mixed in with all the scams. Some people don't think to look there. Good Luck!

North Port Jim did have a decent suggestion about Craigslist. I hired both of my assistants there. What I liked (and why I hired) one of my assistants was because she was very creative. I was looking for someone who was well spoken and web savvy. She made an entire 5 page website tailored to what my job requirements were. The other assistant I hired because she had a lot of experience dealing with bank owned properties.

Seems as though you're heading in the right direction by looking on the web. I did find this company: Interpreter Translator Spanish Portuguese Fort Myers Cape Coral Naples La Belle Clewiston Duly Qualified and I don't know anything about them. And this guy who made his own website, which can be found with a simple search: Julio Vasquez - Professional Translator English-Spanish - Service Not a bad idea.

Here's another company: Global Languages of Naples - The Language Company - A Professional Translation Company located in Southwest Florida. Translations-Accurate, On Time and Within Budget. And another: Southwest Florida Concierge and Guest Services Association - Form (http://southwestflconcierge.com/member/MemberDetail.aspx?orgid=22&corpmember=1 - broken link)
Simultaneous Translation Equipment and Simultaneous Interpretation Conference Services by Lexicon-Global.com
LetSpeak.com Affordable Translation Services in French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, German and more 1-239-274-5700

I would think being a translator you might be able to work long distance as well. Like Jim suggested, you might want to post on the Sarasota board as well.

Good luck with it!

Answering a question from six months ago? My guess is you just compiled that list and needed a place to "fit" it. The OP hasn't been back in over five months.

Other people do searches on this site, just as I did. They might see the thread of someone else looking for jobs in the area and want to read it. So I posted some sites to use. Do you realize how many people are looking for jobs right now?

Yes, I do. I have about 30 family members that live in the area.

I'm not even going to go there.

I am also curious about the job market in the Port Charlotte area compared to Broward county.

I am a school nurse. The salaries in Broward are not good enough for the cost of living. My husband is half way through an HVAC training program at a technical school. It there a county trch school with an HVAC program in that neck of the woods?
