Punta Gorda is a spanish phrase. So the way the Spanish driver pronounces the name is the correct way. Americans just americanize a lot of ethnic words.

I know, my post was meant entirely as tongue in cheek....

Hahahahha... but a lot of us have heard of the Spanish slang P**nta and knows what it means. That could probably be why it is not pronounced correctly in the area. Just a thought.

Maybe, except the word you are thinking of doesn't have an "n" in it.

It's the last name of the founder (Robert Beall) so I don't think taking out the A is an option. And that's probably how the family pronounced it.

I have a bunch of relatives with the last name of Beatty (Batey), but other families with the same name pronounce it as Beety. My relatives aren't about to change the pronunciation, even though Beety makes more sense.

We'll call it Balls in a deliberately silly/crude sort of way.

Yes, he is correct. Punta means "point." If you say "put the chair over there," you don't pronounce the word the same way as when you're taking about golf. You use a "putter" like "gutter" not "pooter" like "shooter."

This thread is funny, but I had the same question many years ago. In other states, the outlet store for Bealls is called Burkes Outlet. I still use the same Monday card in NC, however. Lots of junk, but plenty of bargains if you get lucky. I bought 2 pairs of Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans (the only pants that fit me) for $9.99 on the clearance rack in Bealls Outlet in Englewood, plus I used my 15% off card on Monday. Not a bad deal!

Any of them named Warren? Actually, he added an extra "t" to Beaty.

Well, since we are talking about word pronunciation, I want to add this. I had no idea when I first drove on 776 that El Jobean is pronounced "El Joe-Bean." Thinking I was pronouncing it correctly and everyone else was Americanizing a Spanish name, I kept saying "Hobean" like "Jose." Then I looked the name up online and learned the small town was named for Joel Bean.

Just some trivia for y'all.
