We are looking to buy a home for our retirement on the west coast of Florida. We like the Punta Gorda area, Port Charlottee, etc. We are sailboaters and my husband loves fishing.

Does anyone know about Harbour Heights and whether it is a nice community to buy in? We want to buy in an area that we can rent the house for part of the year as well. Also we want to buy in a nice area not prone to too much crime, etc.

Thanks for your advice.

Don't know much about Harbor Heights. But their are some nice sailboat access canals of Deltona Drive in Punta Gorda. Very safe neighborhood and I would believe that a home there would be easier to rent since it is closer to everything. Most renters are snowbirds and they usually want to be fairly close to everything. Feel free to DM me if you want more info.

funny enough not having been to that area ever, I have now looked at 3 houses in the past week (in the Deep Creek/Punta Gorda part) right near HH. I have to say its a very nice area, deed restricted, well kept older homes, the neighbors we have met seem very nice. had an offer accepted on one which I will be remodelling and another one a potential client has offered on. looks like I may be spending some time down there !!!!! everyone I spoke too loves living there

Just cruised through Harbour Heights today. It appears very rural although you are only 15 min or so away from Murdock Circle in the off season. You're on the upper Peace River and it does get skinny there and it's quite a ways to the harbor proper, where you could raise your sails. Then you have the Rt 41 bridges which I think are 45' or so. Don't know what kind of sail boat your into.

Personally if I were to keep a sailboat behind my house I'd look for areas around the Charlotte Harbor area or Punta Gorda (of which I don't know too much about). Have to watch the tides in winter. Today I saw a couple 'stiks' (masts) leaning over where the keel is sitting in the sand. We do get low tides in the winter here.

Fishing, that's another story! Follow the fishing charlotte harbor thread. You will spend hours. Start on page 1 and go from there. I did. We're on a tidal canal but under a 10' bridge so unless you can unstep your mast, no good.

You'll get a lot of info here. You will have many questions as I did. Great bunch here!

Regardless, it really is a 'cool' place!!!!!!!!

Good luck in your hunt!

Harbor Heights is a very mixed area of older smaller homes and some nicer larger homes. It is a popular place for retirees and is a little ways out. There is a boat ramp and a fishing pier nearby. The location is along the Peace River where you can obtain access to Charlotte Harbor and from there to the Gulf. Also available in the local area are picnic sites, basketball courts, shuffleboard courts, tennis and golf. It is not too far from I-75, about 1 mile, where you can head into Port Charlotte or Punta Gorda.

There is another more upscale gated community with deed restrictions called Harbor Oaks in the same area. It has underground utilities, private streets, sidewalks, street lights and a homeowner assocation. Other options for you would be near Charlotte Harbor in Port Charlotte that has some sailboat access homes and it is not deed restricted. If you want deed restrcted, then Punta Gorda Isles would be an option too.
