If you are looking for something to do over the Memorial weekend 2012, here are some events happening in Charlotte County, FL and surrounding areas.

On Monday, May 28 the Charlotte County Veteran’s Council and the Military Heritage Museum will hold a Memorial Day Celebration, “Memorial Day Today,” in Center Court at Fishermen’s Village, 1200 W. Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda, FL. There is no charge to attend, but you may want to bring your own chair so that you will be assured a seat.
The ceremony will be presented as follows: from 11 to 11:45am the Charlotte High School Symphonic Band will play patriotic music. The official program will begin at noon. The U.S. Paratrooper’s Honor Guard will bring in the colors. Marcella Brown, a local vocalist, will sing the National Anthem. The keynote speaker will be Charlotte County Commissioner and Coast Guard Veteran Stephen Deutsch, who will speak about “Memorial Day Today.” The ceremony will end with a gun salute, “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes and a bugler performing “Taps.” The program will be followed by a reception at the Military Heritage Museum. On Monday, May 28 the Veteran’s Motor Car Club will hold a car show in the Fishermen’s Village parking lot, 2300 W. Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda, FL from 11am to 1:30pm. The “Mighty Might” 1961 Marine Jeep and a “Dodge M37” will be showcased. Fishermen’s Village web link http://fishville.com/.

On Sunday, May 27th the Punta Gorda Elks will hold a Memorial Day Picnic at the beautiful riverside Punta Gorda Elks Lodge, 25538 Shore Dr., Punta Gorda, FL from 2pm to 5pm. The picnic is for members and guests only. You can call to join at 941-637-2606. Music will be presented by Island Vibe. Enjoy Scott’s chicken and hang out by the best tiki bar in Punta Gorda.

On Saturday, May 26th a Veterans fund raiser will be held at American Legion Post #113, 3436 Indiana Rd., Rotonda West, FL. It is sponsored by the Charlotte County Veteran’s Council and will be held from 7 to 9pm. The admission is a $10 donation. Music will be presented by the Two-Fifths Band. 100% of the proceeds will go to help Veterans with assistance in preventing their water and electric from being turned off and eviction from their homes. There will be a Memorial Day Observance as a tribute to our Veterans at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, 27200 Jones Loop Rd, Punta Gorda, FL. Flags will be flying on the roadways and sidewalks leading the way for families who come to visit. Flags and refreshments will be provided at the entrance. The Redneck Yacht Club is hosting a four day Memorial Day Celebration May 25-28, 2012. Come out and get muddy and let loose at the world’s most exciting off-road park. There will be camping, live entertainment, mud, and games. Entertainment includes Blackwater on Friday night, Daryle Singletary on Saturday night and Thom Shepherd on Sunday night. They will also be having a can food drive for the Harry Chapin Foundation. Bring a can of food and drop it off at the gate. Your donation will go to help hungry families living in the area. The bikini beach will be open. Tickets are 50% off for active military and vets, available only at the gate and you must present valid ID. Kids 12 and under are free. If you purchase your ticket at the gate it must be in cash.

The Royal Palm Marina at 779 W. Wentworth St, Englewood will be hosting a Memorial Day Seawall Art Contest on Monday, May 28 at 1pm. 16 contestants will compete to win a $1,000 grand prize. The contest starts on Memorial Day and the final judging will be held on July 8th at 3pm. On Monday, May 28 the annual Memorial Day Parade in Englewood will be held. Participants should line up at 9:30am. The ceremony will start at 10am at Soldier’s Monument, with the parade to kick off immediately after the ceremony. The parade will end at Veteran’s Memorial Park. If there is rain, the program will be held at Bergen PAC, 30 North Van Brunt St, Englewood. The parade is expected to last approximately one hour. This event is sponsored by the Englewood Commemorative Council who takes great pride in honoring the Veterans who contributed so much through the war.

The City of North Port and the American Legion Post #254 will be hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at 10am at Veterans Park, Biscayne and U.S. 41, North Port, FL on Monday, May 28, 2012. The small ceremony will include speakers, presentations of wreaths from the many veteran, military, and public safety organizations, and more. After the ceremony, the community is invited to the American Legion Post #254, 6648 Taneytown Street, North Port, FL for a light lunch. The North Port City Commission presented a proclamation on Monday, May 14, 2012 to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 254 recognizing Poppy Days on May 27 and May 28, 2012. Poppies will be available for a small donation at the Memorial Day event. All proceeds are used to help local veterans. thanks for posting that. we generally go up to sarasota for the memorial day parades. reminds me of what they used to have up north.
