Ok folks, do you put your storm shutters on for a Cat 1 storm? They are predicting this one to be a Cat 1 but of course they can't be positive. Also know that they aren't going to know where it will hit until it gets closer. I'm just trying to be prepared since the worse we have had was TS Debby.

If it looks like it will be close to a direct hit, then I will. Otherwise, no. Great thing about shutters is that you can usually have them up in 2 hrs or less, so as long as you have a few hours notice what the storm will/might do, you should be set.

Thanks HH, I'm kind of making myself nuts worrying what to do and when to do it. I knew this was part of the "deal" when I moved here but this is our first. Oh my, I'm a hurricane virgin.

No worries at this point. That storm is still WAY out there. We go through our hurricane kit every spring and update if necessary, but won't do shutters unless it's a CAT 1 and headed right for us. A safe bet is 24 hrs before anticipated landfall.

Okay, yes I am a hurricane virgin as well. and oops my house didn't come with storm shutters. What really makes me wonder is the people who originally owned the house lived in England and rented the property out...house built in 2007. So did they think there would never be a hurricane here? And apparently since it was built in
2007 they haven't needed anything. I gotta save up for the shutters...so hoping this isn't too bad!

are you sure you havent got impact glass ? i am pretty sure that a home built in 2007 would have to conform to a code where you either have shutters or impact glass ? maybe a call to the county building dept might ease your mind or check the website for what permits got passed

Exactly. In order to install new windows (which a new home would of course have), they must have storm protection (i.e. impact glass, shutters) or else they wouldn't have passed final inspection. So, you probably have the expensive impact glass (VERY surprised that wasn't mentioned in the sale of the home, since that is a valuable selling point!)
