It is Spanish, and as such would be "POONTA Gorda" (fat point). You can say it any way you want, BUT the correct way is the Spanish pronunciation.

that's how we used to say it when we first came here, but "locals" kept correcting us to "their" pronunciation, so we just decided to give in and follow suit to avoid further harassment.

My wife and I both speak Spanish pretty well and simply can't bring ourselves to mispronounce it. I don't recall anyone "correcting" either one of us yet.

Yeah, it seems a little odd that out of all the 'Puntas' around here, that seems to be the only one that's pronounced 'Punt-a', but heck, I'm from New England, where we pronounce Worcester as 'Wooh-stah', Chelmsford as 'Chums-fud' and Peabody as PEE-buddy - who am I to judge.

Yep, my corporate office is in 'billy-rika'. . I forgot all about Stoneham - I'm sure there are at least a hundred more.

Worked in Woobun too! My daughter lives in Haverhill. When I traveled up there last October, I used my GPS to find an Italian restaurant near her house, and of course, when I spoke the name HAVE-rill, my GPS asked me, 'did you mean 'Hey Bro'? Damn near drove off 495 I was laughing so hard.
