My mom is considering moving down to Florida and we will be checking out the west and east coasts plus central florida to see what area she likes the best. She is 75 years old and active . How are the communities in this area? She is thinking about purchasing a home in the $150-$200 range. Is there any nice places for her in this area?

Would your Mom be looking for a condo or single family home in a 55+ community? Here is a link to the 55+ communities in Florida - Housing Directory - Florida Commission on Human Relations

If she is looking for a single family home, some of the communities in the area within her price range are Kings Gate in Port Charlotte, Cypress Falls in North Port, and Park Forest in Englewood.

Condo 55+ = Cocoplum, Oak Forrest, Quails Run, and Vel Gardens.

Villa 55+ = Englewood Beach, Foxwood, Glen Oaks Ridge, Oakhurst, Strathmore Riverside, Tallywood, and Village Green.

You can search for properties in the local MLS at Florida Homes for Sale direct from MLS

Just an FYI:

Cypress Falls is more of a Resort Community but in addition to Single Family Homes, it has Paired Villas and Garden Villas in the price range your looking at.

We are from Maine, looking for a place to escape to in Florida during winter months for when we retire in about 5 years. North Port is one area we have interest in. What is it like there? Some people say it's full of foreclosures and short sales (meaning the occupants don't care about or can't afford to keep their properties up) and boarded up houses from the recession of a few years ago. We are looking at all possibilities: Villas, condos, sf homes. Don't want to spend more than $140. Less would be even better!

We live in north port, our area does have a few unoccupied homes but the lawns are mowed and some of these homes are now going on the market. We also have new construction going on all around us. I have never seen a boarded up home in our area. Some have their hurricane shutters up but those are people that have go e back north for the summer. You need to come look for yourself. Some don't like north port but for us it's perfect.

Yes....and some people are quite envious and have their own agenda because they overpaid for the privilege of living in an overcrowded, congested area.

Anyone reading this should be checking out North Port for themselves (and making their own mind up)....not listening to "others".

Thank you for your input. We are planning to get down there to check out NP sometime soon. We just came back from a visit in April. Stayed in Sarasota (beautiful, but too busy and big for our tastes, and homes are too expensive, compared to other areas). Also spent a day in Venice--very nice. But everyone seems to think it's very geriatric. It can't be too much so; we saw schools, families with children, day cares, basketball courts, "hip" restaurants with margarita bar, etc.
