Only cut the dead fronds. You don't want to cut the green ones. The plant uses the green fronds for energy(this is why the lowest fronds eventually turn yellow and then brown). If you cut too many of the green ones, you are cutting off energy/food and the tree will not be as healthy.

Every time new fronds grow from the spike at the top, another older frond turns brown. During rainy season you get lots of growth...thus lots of new fronds spike at the top. Also lots of of fronds turn brown as well because the new frond used up the energy from the old frond that turned brown...kind of one-for-one.

Tell that to my backyard neighbor.....they cut several layers of green fronds yesterday on just one palm. ...It was the one(of theirs) that blocked their view from my pool! They didn't touch the other 3 palms they had that were planted along side of it. I would had never cut the banana palms down (which were in front of that palm) if I knew they were going to butcher their palm and "open up their view" to my pool!!! (it was perfect for privacy, no dead was on it).
