On the news this evening they told again about a deadly bacteria in brackish and salt water. It has calaimed it's 9th victim. They warn do not go in the water if you have any cuts or scrapes and do not handle or eat raw shellfish. The story is on abc sun coast news. Just thought people need to be aware.

NP, I have been watching this on couple of the Fl. fishing forums that I follow. As a fisherman this is some scary stuff. It seems to thrive in warm salt and brackish water. From what I have read it is more on the east coast side esp. in and around the Indian river/lagoon area. Seems like the hotter the water the more chance you have of getting it. I am sure that it will spread to other areas as well. Thanks for the heads up.

swmrbird, don't quote me on this but I think it is Vibrio vulnificus. One article that I read said that a man was in the water crabbing and after going home he began getting lesions on his leg (apparently he had an open wound or cut) and went to the ER but was too late. This I believe was in the Halifax river. Hope this helps. If you goggle this you will find a few stories on this, pretty nasty.

Probably most of the members on here that are from the Chesapeake Bay region are familiar with
mycobacteriosis (or more specifically
mycobacterium marinum) , a.k.a. fish handler's disease. Nasty stuff! It's recommended that you know wear gloves when handling any marine life. I have a friend who's grandfather got it in his hand. Nearly lost his hand and life.
If this is the same stuff, it looks like gloves will be warranted here too!

This bacteria is bad stuff. If you're starting to show signs of infection, I don't think I would recommend experimenting with OTC treatments. Unless, that is, you're willing to risk loosing a limb or your life.

This bacteria is bad stuff. If you're starting to show signs of infection, I don't think I would recommend experimenting with OTC treatments. Unless, that is, you're willing to risk loosing a limb or your life.
