95% of contractors here carry Ruud. From my research, seems like builder-grade. Not sure if Carrier or Trane are actually better, or just more expensive...

We made the mistake of allowing the contractor on our new house to install a Ruud unit instead of the Carrier that was in the specs of the contract. The indoor fan motor needed replacement after 3 months. Google Ruud complaints and you will see a mountain of them while there is virtually none for Carrier.

I have a Rudd in two different houses down here. No problems. A good installer is more important than the brand of the unit imho.

welshlady....Rudd, Rheem and Weatherking are identical units with different stickers.

Goodman is another builder-grade brand that many installers quote. Folks want cheap prices, so they quote the cheaper brands.

Id recommend a Trane. In my business it seems to be the one that has some of the best endurance. As others have said Goodman Rudd are builders grade. However, that being said, I have seen many that are 15 yrs old and still going.

If it's going near the lanai/patio, or any other frequently enjoyed area, make sure you get a quiet one! Our 2003 Frigidaire unit (was here when we bought the house) has such a loud fan, I can barely hear the TV on the lanai. Can't wait to replace the system just for noise reduction alone, plus better efficiency.

Its very little about the brand, and much more about maintenance. Do most of it yourself. Replace the filter once a month in summer or every two months if you use the expensive 90 day filters. Never never use the green fiberglass filters, they only filter out birds and golf balls. Walmart has them from 8 bucks for the 30 day to 16 for the 90 day. Shut the heat exchanger [outside unit] off and take off the top once a year and spray air or water from the inside to clean the heat fins. Spray it with Demon WP every few months to keep the ant and other vermin out of the unit. Just this will keep the unit running for many years. I have the luxury of coming from a family of Heating and cooling pros, so when my unit would stop running with them on the phone I tracked my problem down to the circuit board in the Hex unit. I also found that one of the capacitors was leaking so I replaced both capacitors and the circuit board, cost 90 bucks for the parts. It would have cost me 500 to do what I did.

++5 for Demon WP! Awesome for critters that like to plug things. Plus they do get rid of the Black/brown widows!
Caps? I'm going to replace mine every 2 years. Had one go bad right before a trip. A couple bucks, and no issues with mold or a burnt out compressor.
Good info Saxon!
