Boy, it really didn't look that bad or that old. Pretty ironic how there are building a century, or centuries, old still standing but yet "modern" buildings, with all of our technology, are pretty much disposable. Oh well, it's county owned. I'm sure they don't care where the money comes from.

Just needed repairs that pushed it over the 50/50 rule, so the cost of repairs skyrocketed to bring up to current code.

Seems like that could have been avoidable by making the repairs when they were needed instead of waiting until they ballooned to beyond 50%. Makes you wonder if it was intentional so that there was an excuse for a new building.

I worked on a 16th century building back in England that was mainly timber and was fire damaged

we had an engineer come out who said we would have to use steel beams because ' I cant prove timber is effective enough'....we pointed out that it had lasted 500 years previously, he scratched his head and agreed !!!!

20 years on its a Thai restaurant

Demolition of Former Historical Center Building

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (May 4, 2015) – Charlotte County will begin demolition of the former Charlotte County Historical Center on May 4, 2015, located at 22959 Bayshore Road, Port Charlotte. The building has major structural deficiencies in its pilings, siding, windows, deck, soffits and ground floor ceiling. Combined with required interior renovations, the cost to renovate the Historical Center was estimated at nearly $600,000. This dollar amount would trigger the “50 percent rule” — if the cost of improvements exceeds 50 percent of the market value of a building, it must be brought up to current floodplain management standards, requiring extensive costly modifications.

Once the structure is removed, the space will be incorporated into Bayshore Live Oak Park. The Historical Center functions, collections and staff have been relocated to the Grace Street Annex, 514 East Grace Street, Punta Gorda, and continue to provide programs and services. Contact the Historical Center at 941.629.PAST (7278).
