I will take your advice and do an annual systemic drench of the root zone. I already have to do that for my hybiscus and sheferela (Arbacola) plants do keep the green affids off of them in summer.

FYI everyone, this is the last weekend before Fall we're allowed to legally fertilize the lawn with nitrogen in Charlotte County. This is to reduce nitrogen runoff into the waterways and improve the health of the estuary. Nitrogen in the water adds undesirable growth in the water, which cuts down on oxygen in the water, which our fish need to thrive.

I know, it's always about the fish with me. At least I started out talking about palms.
Not that I'm in favor of dosing up the harbor with nitrogen and phosphorous, but one well-regarded theory on the spread of red tide is nutrient deficient water - sometimes you can't win for losing.

The occurrence of red tides in some locations appears to be entirely natural (algal blooms are a seasonal occurrence resulting from coastal upwelling, a natural result of the movement of certain ocean currents) while in others they appear to be a result of increased nutrient loading from human activities. The growth of marine phytoplankton is generally limited by the availability of nitrates and phosphates, which can be abundant in agricultural run-off as well as coastal upwelling zones. Coastal water pollution produced by humans and systematic increase in sea water temperature have also been implicated as contributing factors in red tides
