This evening we were down at the beach watching the sunset and when we started to head back up to our house we spotted this little guy. He was lost and headed for the road. We called our neighbor, who is in the turtle patrol. She is in charge of this specific nest and she instructed us to scoop him up and bring him to her house. If they are left on the beach in the daytime the birds get them. We brought the turtle over to her house and she and our youngest daughter are out at the beach releasing this turtle and two others from the same nest that hatched last night. We named him Yertle the Turtle. Good luck buddy

How cute! Thanks for sharing! Does the island you live on, have nests of the sea turtles? Also, are there different species?

This season was excellent for the turtles, so far. Right now there are 250+ turtle nests, just on Palm Island. There are three types of turtles that are on our beaches. The Loggerheads, which is the kind of turtle that we found tonight. Then there's the Green Turtles. Out of the 250+ nests this year only 5 are Green Turtles. Then we have the Kemps Ridley Turtles. There have been 8 nests of Kemps so far. The Kemps are one of the only turtles who lay the eggs in the daytime and they usually hatch in the daytime as well. Both the Kemps and Green Turtle are more common on the other coast and the Kemps can also be found in South America. Mote has tracked some Leatherbacks and Hawksbills but we haven't seen any of them on our beaches. An average nest has about 60-200 turtles in it. Most statics say that about 1 in 1,000 turtles actually make it to adulthood to come back and lay eggs or reproduce. Hopefully our Yertle will be one of those!

I saw an adult turtle out in the harbor yesterday. What a beautiful creature it was. Thanks for saving the little guy.
