We have a fish light and I can recognize a few of the "regulars". Two snook, some large catfish, mangrove snapper and a tiny stingray. But the last few nights there have been two fish, that have a fat head, rounded snout and fat body, that swim closer to the bottom. They are about 18". Remember, I am looking down on them, can't really see them sideways. Their swimming isn't a flexible as a catfish.. if that makes sense. Any ideas on what species they might be? I'm thinking they might be young ones of the 3'+ one I saw one night. It had very defined scales, with blackish edge to them? Hubby thinks they could be mullet? I don't think I've seen mullet that big! Ok, call me strange, but I literally lay on the dock every night and look into the fish light like it's an aquarium! Any ideas?

Probably mullet. They love to feed off the lights. If they're constantly open/closing their mouths, then definitely mullet. I have two lights, and I'm getting more and more mullet and less snook (of course this time of year the snook are going out to the beaches a mile away)

Yup, sounds like mullet. 18" mullet is not at all uncommon. Good eating size .

Defined scales, sounds like a tarpon if not mullet.

I had a large black drum swimming by the light for a few nights. He was a big boy I guess 50/60 pounds.

Ok, upon continued observation, I do believe the fish are mullet. They are constantly opening and closing their mouths. But the BIG one seen another time was closer to the surface and not the same fish. Close to 4'. From online search, think it was a tarpon. Thanks for all the help!

In my light it seems that the mullet usually hang out right at the bulb and when a tarpon visits he will hang out around the outer edge of the light and in the shadows. It's really cool when the light reflects off of the side of a tarpon. Those big silver scales really light up. Beautiful fish to watch cruising around.
