Apparently I will have to abandon my well to have a new septic tank installed. Inspector says it has to be 50 feet from system, and I am at 30 feet.
I don't care about the well....don't use it much any way.
Has anyone been in this situation, and if so, what did it cost to abandon the well ??

I think it is a BFD ... keeps the bureaucrats happy. I believe it has to grouted full and then capped. Permitted and work done by licensed well driller ... I'd guess it will not be cheap but for sure it is unnecessary as a practical matter ... lol. Seems the water table is so low that it should really be a few hundred feet away ... but lots are too small.

Yep.....BS
It has been there for 30 years, and all of a sudden, it's a problem ??? If I never replaced my tank, it would always be 30 feet away. I can understand "NEW" construction using new codes. But I think in my situation, it should be grandfathered.

I'm surprised it isn't, especially since I'm assuming from what you said it's not used for house service. Can you keep it for outside irrigation? That's what we were able to do when we got central water.

It has never been used for house water. Only for sprinkler system. Makes no sense to me. I'll call the health dept. inspector when I'm not so aggravated.

I hope not ... that is not what that is for.

I don't think anything is grandfathered when you do a replacement as opposed to a repair less than 50%.

I'd check closer if it is not connected to a potable water supply it very well may not apply ... call one of the irrigation guys and ask about their wells.

Check laws for abandoning a shallow well in your area. Where im at the homeowner has a choice to plug it himself or use a contractor. I filled out a DEQ sheet on line form. put location of the well on the property, dia. of pipe, I used a fishing line w/sinker to measure total depth, fishing line w/bobber to measure water to ground level ,went to well supply house bought 10 lb.bag of bentonite pellets, about 8 bucks, looks like kitty litter, acts like hydraulic cement when wet. I poured pellets down the pipe adding a little water occasionally. Dug down 18 inches ,sawed the pipe, put a slurry of crowned pellet over the pipe. Buried with dirt. Sent filled out form to DEQ for recording. Done. The main concern is to prevent above ground contaminates leach into the aquifer.

I checked....in Charlotte county, you must be licensed and insured to abandon a well. So, I cannot do it myself. Have hired company to do it. Will cost me $300 + $20 bag for the stuff they seal the well with.( how many bags will be determined by the depth of the well )
The ONLY good thing about this......Charlotte Co. does not charge for a permit to abandon a well.

The money I am spending on this would have bought a lot of beer !!!
