My niece called me and begged me to quickly sell my house (I'm a snowbird) in North Port before the Red Tide effect destroys the property values. I told her I doubt it would have much effect in North Port since it's not considered a coastal town, is more of a working class area and I'm actually expecting them to rise with the Atlanta Braves building a spring training camp here.

Is anyone noticing a negative effect on values due to Red Tide, either in North Port or the coastal towns? I would be interested in what effect, if any, is happening now or what could be projected in the future. I would be especially interested in hearing from REA's on this.

I've seen zero affect on anything except direct waterfront properties along the coast. Even those are still selling, just takes a little longer.

That's good to hear. I really didn't think it would but I may be selling in a few years and didn't know if I needed to rush the decision.

Now, if this continues on and on (it's come back again this week), I would think in another 2 yrs or so it might start having some drastic consequences. However, it's from Clearwater down to Marco Is, so unless all prospective buyers go to the east coast instead (not likely), we'll still have buyers here.

Natural phenomenon rarely have a huge impact on values. If they did, Los Angeles home values would have been going down since the Northridge Earthquake, not going way, way up.

Same for San Francisco since the Marina quake in 1989.

Red Tide, unlike blue algae, is a natural phenomenon that starts way out in the Gulf. I’d be more worried if I lived near the outflow of Lake Okechobee, such as as Fort Meyers or St. Lucie, where toxic blue algae occurs.
