Oh Tetley Can really relate.
We went through the very same thing last year, our 12 year olds were never once seperated aside from spay/neuter procedures (adopted them together). Could never imagine one without the other. Wanted so badly to get more doggies becuase we'd always had a very big family of dogs and when we did lose one to old age, there were always the others there for each other.
But then we moved and our dogs dwindled

We paid extra, extra attention to our little survivor. Think that's the best we can do until another joins our families.

We do not have good vet places near us and we had to think hard about the possibility of needing to get any new dogs to a vet if we ever had to. Our longtime ones are quite a distance away in our old city and hours aren't as abundant as the convenient places near us are.
After our dog now, we simply won't be able to have any more (unless we move). After all the misdiagnosing and overdrugging, and premature deaths we dealt with (only since moving), we learned a very painful lesson, which also actually cost three times our normal vet's fees, only to never get well from all the side efects of the over drugging and garbage dog food they pushed.

Our Dalmation was apparently allergic to corn/soy, hence all the breakouts and what-not.
But who knew? We trusted the mcvets and only kept going back, going back.... for endless "visits." Her organs shut down... what, from her skin allergies? Her gazillion blood/Xray tests were fine initially.

I hope you have an Angel Vet and will adopt more furry children :>)

Default they are our best friends forever...

I am so sorry pal.
My lab is 10 1/2. And 2 years ago he slipped on the ice when we were visiting MN and had a spinal injury that paralyzed him. He turned out just fine in the end, completely mobile again- still has a little handicap but we all pitch in and help him all the time. My point is my heart shattered with the thought of not having him pull thru. And had to work hard to point my focus on his recovery. We bought him an orthopedic matress, tv, and all slept in the living room for a month while he recovered and one morning he woke us all up with kisses. He was walking!!!! Not ready for the marathon, but was good to go,
Every night I go to bed tearful, even tho he is ok, we all love him to no end.
Very frustrating the thought of him leaving us someday.
And feel where you are.

I am so sorry again, and hugs for rescuing that kid!!!!!!!!!!

Funny thing is, they never judge you, stick by your side, going with you trough thick and thin, good times and bad......unconditionally, being better then human friends.

This oh so true of my little Rosco. He has been with me through thick and thin ... my furkid rock, so to speak.

I'm sending each of you a heartfelt thank you for your kind words and advice. I was truly blessed to have had Rosco in my life. I know, without a doubt that in time I'll be giving a home to another pooch who needs lots of love. At the moment my Cypres is getting a lot of attention. You could say that we are helping eachother!

Again, thank you!

Tet

Yes...that's the right attitute to have, in this hard and heavy time.
I am so sure that Rosco would have never wanted you or Cypres to be sad, upset and sull......and I am sure, he was a "clown" of some sort, making you laugh, and loving you laugh.
Hang in there...... the both of you have so much love to give........endless!

Don't forget if you decide to get a puppy to help you and Cypres through the loss, find a shelter that will let you BOTH come in and pick the new pup! They will be more likely to be friends and get along. (Advice from a vet and a shelter) I'm so sorry for your loss.

Wonderful idea...and I second that.
That's exactly how I chose my second one (not death related, but as a companion for my 4 year old pup)
They are one head and one a**.....LOL......and the BEST decision I have ever made.

This to me says it all, when we have to do the unthinkable, I remember cutting this out of the paper years ago, it gives me comfort even now:

Tribute To Dakota

I remember bringing you home.
You were so small and cuddly
with your tiny paws and soft fur.
You bounced around the room
with your eyes flashing and ears flopping.
Once in a while you'd let out a little yelp
just to let me know this was your territory.
Making a mess of the house
and chewing on everything in sight
became a passion
and when I scolded you,
you just put your head down
and looked up at me with those innocent eyes
as if to say," I'm Sorry,
but I'll do it again as soon as you're not looking."
As you got older,
you protected me by looking out the window
and barking at everyone who walked by.
When I had a tough day at work,
you would be waiting for me
with your tail wagging just to say,
"Welcome home! I missed you!"
You never had a bad day
and I could always count on you
to be there for me.
When I sat down to watch T.V. or read the paper,
you would hop on my lap looking for attention.
You never asked for anything more
than to have me pat your head
so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.
As you got older,
you moved around more slowly.
Then one day,
old age finally took its toll,
and you couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore.
I knelt down and patted you lying there,
trying to make you young again.
You just looked up at me
as if to say you were old and tired
and that after all of these years of not asking for anything,
you had to ask me to do one last favor.
With tears in my eyes,
I drove you one last time to the vet.
One last time you were lying next to me.
For some strange reason
you were able to stand up in the animal hospital.
Perhaps it was your sense of pride.
As the vet led you away,
you stopped for an instant, turned your head
and looked at me as if to say,
" Thank you for taking care of me."
And I thought, " No . . . Thank you for taking care of me."

I didn't cry so bad when my grandmother died, and she always lived around the corner.
(Thanks for this one, Midnight.)

Just you describing him as a clown makes me smile. Oh the joys of spoiling our pets! And everything they give back!
