A friend of mine has been caring for an injured woodpecker (a yellow bellied sapsucker) for a few days now. She found it injured on the street. It can fly a little bit, but it's not eating a lot. It has eaten a few crickets. It's getting skinner. I'm afraid it probably won't make it. There is a bird rehab place nearby, but they can't heal it if it won't eat.

Anyway, we're taking care of it this weekend while she is out of town. We have some worms to try to feed it. We'll probably have to keep it in the bathroom with the door closed to keep it from the cats. It sleeps in a box.

Anyway, I know wild birds are hard to keep alive in captivity. Any advice?

Thanks.

Poor baby.
Yes it's difficult, good luck and bless you for trying.
They also like suet, you can get it in small blocks with a wire holder cage.
And will need water.
They are also **very sensitive to temperature changes and stress.

I gave him some water. I saw a cat knock the door open so I ran in there. The blanket was undisturbed and the bird has no puncture wounds, but he looks very much dead. I don't see any blood anywhere. I do think it was natural causes because I see no blood or teeth marks. It's here two hours and it dies. I'm not much of a pet sitter apparently.

It sounds like the bird was already on his way to the rainbow bridge...he wasn't eating, and even the bird rehab. place couldn't help...you did your best. I've had a 50/50 ratio of saving birds, some made it when I didn't think they would, and others died on me even though it looked promising at the outset. I believe in destiny, which makes it easier to accept the losses along the way. Thank you for trying to help him...RIP, little bird.
