Yes, the grief DOES ease, but it can take a long time sometimes - one day though your memories will focus more on happy memories than on the ache of the loss. Please take comfort from the fact that you did your job as an owner, OP. Whenever we get a dog, it is with the knowledge that they will likely predecease us. It's an inevitability for the most part. George Carlin had a bit about how when you get a pet you're also buying a small tragedy that used to crack me up and make me cry at the same time.

You raised and cared for your dog well into her senior years, and when the time came, you acted selflessly by choosing to end things for her when there was no longer any quality of life, rather than keep her around and suffering because you couldn't bear to let go. You did right by her. I'm so sorry for your loss, but it sounds you provided your dog with a happy and well-loved life as well as a comfortable, fear-free and merciful death. Please hold on to that - you gave her something so many dogs don't get.

It's a really cold comfort now, but I have found one of the things that does keep me on an even keel when i remember previous pets was that I made the difficult decisions at the right times for them. It was what they were owed.

Hugs to you. I know there's a void in your life right now - we have all been there. Just be kind to yourself right now.

Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart for all your kind words. I am lost in the morning and at bedtime. We had such a routine. I swear I heard her coming up the stairs this morning. I just keep expecting her to appear. God this hurts 💔💔
