I don't. Perhaps never will. The guilt is too overwhelming. Feel like we, ourselves, prolonged our furbabies' unnecessary suffering these past 10 years because my family all trusted people which my gut feeling said to run from.

I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy what our beloved pets (and we've gone through) since moving away from our vets who never pretended to know about what to feed. So, as unpopular as it is because people who want so badly to trust won't face the truth, I won't give up trying to spare even one out of 50 this heartache.

From Dr Lisa Pierson Feeding Your Cat** Know the Basi <<<<Kidney Failure: Kidney disease is probably the leading cause of mortality in the cat. It is troubling to think about the role that chronic dehydration may play in feline kidney failure. And remember, cats are chronically dehydrated when they are on a diet of predominantly dry food. The prescription dry 'renal diets' such as Science Diet k/d - which is commonly prescribed by veterinarians - contain only a small amount of moisture leaving your cat in a less than optimal state of water balance. I must say that I find it truly amazing when I hear about the very large numbers of cats receiving subcutaneous fluids while being maintained on a diet of dry food. This is extremely illogical and every attempt should be made to get these cats on a diet that contains a higher moisture content. Please also note the following list of the first four ingredients of Science Diet dry k/d after reviewing this section on reading a pet food label - and bearing in mind that your cat is a carnivore. The first three ingredients are not even meat and the fourth ingredient is a by-product meal.
Brewers rice, corn gluten meal, pork fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), chicken by-product meal
The purpose of this prescription diet is to restrict protein which it certainly does. Unfortunately, it restricts it to the point that the cat will often catabolize (use for fuel) his own muscle mass which results in muscle wasting and weight loss. The level of protein in this diet is not only at an extremely low level, it is in an incomplete form for a carnivore. Note that it is made up mainly of plant proteins - not meat proteins. >>>

I don't read posts in the cat forum any longer because pet parents will STILL feed what a vet says to -- even though the dry "diets" are what CAUSES Diabetes and all these common ailments. But I try to spread the word elsewhere and had to share this in here, because this is precisely why so many pets in this forum have died, yet the owners won't ever be informed of this evidence because of media advertising $$$$$.

We just lost our last dog 2 weeks ago. Can't have any more because the home is too far from real veterinarians (no selling food and not pushed to upsell drugs) . The ones near the home only succeeded in making our pets sicker. They started dropping like flies and we had no idea why....until last year when the Internet resources wised us up.

Please, I want to know more. I have lost two cats and they both had symptoms of renal failure.

When my last one got sick the doctor advised me to feed him something high in protein so I started feeding him baby food. Unfortunately my beloved Rufus was too far gone.

Since that scare with poison being in our pets food I had been thinking they needed something else to eat and babyfood would be a good thing to think about.

The little baby I have now is eating some dry food and baby food.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Lindsey,

These Doctors, renown veterinarians and nutrition specialists, have all the information you're looking for:

Feeding Your Cat Know the Basi (Dr Lisa Pierson)
YourDiabeticCat.com - Helping and Preventing Feline Diabetes (Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins)
and Doctor Michael Fox HOME

I implore pet owners to NEVER, EVER listen to a vet selling/recommending anything, or recommending food unless they are formally studied in nutrition/Holistic.
(being conned by big XXXX food company does NOT count.)

Regular vets know not one iota regarding nutrition, and have NO business especially selling anything in their lobbies. They make these animals sick(er). I can not stress this enough. They study medicine, and medicine only.

If this post saves one cat from emergency Catherization and Kidney Failure, I pray it does. One less Rainbow Bridge thread this year!

Years ago, I had a cat whose urethra got plugged from the ash in the cat food we fed him. I use a low ash type now. What I can't believe is that they still sell the other type since it is known to cause so many problems.

I was watching an Oprah show and she makes her dogs food from scratch. With that disaster with so many pets dying, she of course can afford to do this.

Thanks for the link.

Oprah has Dr Marty Goldstein as her vet, he's another great resource.

But we all can, really, afford it. It's the corn-cheap filler laden garbage which proves much more expensive because all the animal does is poop it out, and animal is still hungry because they're not getting any nutrients (also why they eat doo-doo.) And the animal will require big time health care subsequently. That stuff will catch up to them.

A vet will sell you the "ash and protien" stories; they have absolutely no clue whatsoever -- only what the companies train them to say. The above Doctors (and their like colleagues) explain about the QUALITY of protein necessary, and that it's actually carbohydrates which mess these species up so bad to begin with.

Those "prescription" foods, for example, use Soy stuff, as it's a cheap form of "protein".
Soy, however, is a PROVEN, common allergen (keeps the vets busy and most profitable. that's for sure!!)

PS Be sure to visit the Feline Diabetes message boards with all the Kitty parents needing less to NO MORE insulin merely because they take their cats off dry and feed them what a strict carnivore needs in his/her diet. The media won't inform us of this evidence, though. We get "idol" garbage forced in our faces instead. So our pets just keep dying when they shouldn't be because NOBODY KNOWS this stuff unless they go digging deep on the Internet.
