Got a quote to remove about thirty trees from back yard to round off tree line so that if I wanted to expand deck off of the back of the house there would still be plenty of lawn left for kids and what not. Also, removing some skinny pines out in the middle of yard that don't really look right there and block activities. This also includes removing a fallen tree next to driveway. All stumps ground down and graded in preparation for seed.

Price is $3100, is it good? I am thinking it isn't horrible.

That sounds reasonable. We payed $2000 for 20 pines, several of which were tricky (near house). We also got a break on the price because he chipped the trees on site and didn't haul anything away.

Just make sure your tree guy is insured.

He is insured, one of the first things I asked, thanks for providing this info, it's nice to have some numbers to compare the quote to.

Sounds a little high to me. We paid about $1500.00 in Cary and had about 20 trees removed, all close to the house. Most of them were HUGE, pines, and Oaks. I can't remember the guys name right now, but he's popular in our neighborhood. He was a referral by the guy who lives across the street who works in landscaping.
If I think of it, I'll post it here.

Will do, I actually decided to go with Carolina Outdoor Care, on the recommendation of a poster on another thread. They quote me the $3100 and have all the insurance required. They are a pretty large/popular outfit and the guy who is running the job is really nice. I think I might utilize them for all my heavy landscaping projects.

Thanks for everyone's input as always. I'll post some before and after pictures so you can see how it came out and why we wanted it done.

Here is the before picture:

http://www.thescimecas.com/misc/forum/treelinebefore.jpg (broken link)

As you can see the tree line is more pushed back on the right than on the left and there are some skinny pines that are just hanging out in the open. After the job is done the tree line will be uniform from right to left giving me another 500 sq. ft. or so and will make the back yard a nice rectangle with no trees in the way. Perfect for throwing a ball around when my kids get a little bigger

Can anyone tell me what is a reasonable price for 1 large pine tree...fairly close to the house? I got one quote of $700...that seems like alot for 1 tree!!! It is a big one, and will have to be hauled out.

Thanks!
