We sold a van but had the title so can't help there...but the DMV here has always been very helpful over the phone.

NC DMV - selling car

There's a number listed that you can call for more info.

I can't see how anyone would pay you without a title in hand. Unless there was a personal relationship between you and the buyer, how could they be sure you'd pay off the lien and get them a clear title?

If the car's not titled in NC, you might ask a dealer to recommend a notary or dealer who could do the deal and get the buyer an NC title.

Carmax might match the offer and they can handle the lien issue.
