Would you rather let them have it deteriorate to where it started to crack on the off chance "that one time" an airplane lands its landing gear trench themselves a new path into the asphalt causing the plane to flip over?

Perhaps I was being a bit dramatic, but you get the point. An improperly maintained landing strip will eventually result in failure. That failure will most likely occur when a plane strikes the surface in some fashion.

You do realize that their are hundreds of dirt, gravel, and grass landings strips all over the world that planes including commercial land on everyday? Heck, pilots are even landing commercial planes in the river and the planes are faring just fine!
