I am currently a 5th grade teacher in NYC and am looking to relocate to Wake County next summer. I have an M.S. in SpEd and have 2 years of experience. I was wondering how far in advance I should start applying for jobs? I am in the process of changing my teaching certification over to a NC cert. I know some schools are year round, so I wasnt sure if they hire in the spring and summer like here in NYC.
I saw some jobs posted on the Wake County School District website, does this mean that they are looking for teachers there? or do they have to post the job even though they might already have a candidate in mind?
I was also wondering if any other teachers have done this move and what they can say about any differences in the teaching field?
Thanx

The special ed. cert might help you out. I do know that budget cuts have meant that teaching posts are few and far between, and many of the ads you see are (I have been told) for jobs that will probably get filled by a teacher with tenure who's been displaced from her current job. It's a real mess. I hope you find something fast! It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and get all your application materials in to the county and start applying to schools.

Thanx for the feedback and support. I will be submitting my paperwork to the county within the next few weeks and will be taking a trip out there in Dec. to scope out the scene.

I am going through this myself. I'm certified K-6 and ESE in Florida and now in NC as well. Just be patient. Once you get your certification and application done through the state, they send to the counties you specify. Wake County requires a supplemental package to be submitted to them which has to be entered into their system before anyone will even give you the time of day. In the paperwork that comes with the package, it says that it takes approximately 2 weeks to input the supplemental package. However, when I went into the county offices, they said it's more like 6-10 weeks. Sigh. I am still waiting and it's been more than 10 weeks. Again, good luck.

Teaching jobs in Wake are tough to come by now. When we first moved here in 2005 it was great, but with the economy and the shortfall in their budget they have let many teachers and admin staff go. You can also look at Orange and Chatham counties. My sister in-law at one point was looking to possibly move here from NJ and she is a teacher. Not sure about NYC but unlike NJ there are no teacher unions here. It is a regional system, unlike NJ which is usually run by each town. Still reporting to the state but not all the schools are under one umbrella like in Wake. Your teaching experience will carry down here as she found out but your pay is less. Not sure for what you teach though. Still worth a shot to look around and see how you like the area. Check out the neighboring counties as well. Johnston is another one to consider. Good luck in your search!

I wouldn't hold your breathe waiting for the county to contact you about your paperwork. I would start ASAP sending your resume' to the principals listed on the job website. I got hired in June and started in August at a traditional calendar school. So far Wake county seems like a nice county to work in, I moved from Atlanta and the conditions were much worse, so from my perspective Wake county is awesome.

A neighbor wanted Wake but has to commute to Johnston County.

Be aware that the state health plan is very expensive for dependents and has high deductibles and copays.

Things are not that cheap here and you may well miss the good public transit in NYC.
