Has anyone seen or heard these in the Triangle? The last few mornings, I have been awakened to this outside my window-

We go out on the porch and listen. We hear the male with the loud call and one time we heard the smaller female calling back. We've never been able to see them because it's too dark in the trees at that hour, but it would be very cool if we did!

That's awesome! I've only seen an owl outside the zoo a few times in my life and enjoyed every encounter. Enjoy your encounter and take some pictures if you can!

Neat! Now that it has been cooler at night we've been able to leave our windows open, I've been able to hear is a Barred Owl that hangs out in the woods around our house. I've had a chance to see him fly a few times (which is cool), but have never seen him perched in a tree. I love hearing him.

Yes, we saw one in the tree in front of our house in North Cary one night shortly before we moved. My husband saw it first and quietly called me to come look. It was just sitting in the tree, looking around. It was dramatically big. Then as we watched it suddenly took flight, completely silently, and was gone.

We have several owls in our central Cary neighborhood, but I have no idea what kind they are. They're huge though, that much I can tell you! Big enough to pick up a kitten and have dinner!

We've got a passel of barred owls in our neighborhood. They go off, all night long. Had some down by the creek during the day, followed to calls to under a tree but never saw them. VERY loud calls

During the 11 years I was in Raleigh I heard an owl every night but never saw him. The night before I moved to AK I sat down by my kitchen window, glanced outside and there sat the owl staring at me- just a couple of feet away. We stared at each other for a very long time. I really felt like he was saying goodbye to me. A very special experience!

Very cool stories! That barred owl call almost sounds like a rooster! I only heard the female this morning. Maybe the male has flown off in search of someone else? She played too-much hard to get! I found some info about great horned owls. Apparently, they pair up by December to nest in Jan/Feb. It's a little early now to hear pair calls, but I guess these owls aren't wasting time. They started calling as soon as the weather turned a little cooler.

We live near downtown Raleigh in a wooded area and I have heard a great horned owl call, but never seen one. As you say, it was very loud and distinct, so we went online to figure out which owl the call was coming from.

We have seen the smaller owls...not sure what kind.
