I guess that all depends on the child. I'm thinking the magnet schools would be the best bet. Ligon, Carnage etc.

I don't know any that specifically have it as part of their 6th grade curriculum, but all of them offer algebra I and I think any child can take it as long as they test into it and are recommended for it.

Well, we are not in the Triangle, but my daughter is taking an Algebra 1 class and she is in the 7th grade. Its something new they are doing this year so the kids are on a "trial" basis for 20-30 days. If they can handle it, then they stay in Algebra 1. If not, they go back to a basic math class. I actually like it. They told the kids, its going to be a whirlwind. You will have homework every night and its going to be a fast paced class at the beginning to see who can pick it up. My daughter says its pretty hard, but so far she's making an A.

This is in Johnston County (Clayton) by the way. I think its great. She will have a high school math credit in the 7th grade.

Wow. . . . and to think that when I was in high school in the late 70's we didn't get Algebra I until 9th grade. . . . . and that was considered advanced. Algebra I and II were 9th and 10th. Trig and Geometry were 11th, and Calculus was 12th.

If your child has already taken pre-algebra in 5th grade, I'm sure he/she can be accommodated. My son is currently taking Honors Algebra 1 in 7th grade for HS credit and his school (Davis Drive Middle) has at least 2 classes full (40 +) of kids taking it, so I'm sure that if your child was ready for Algebra 1, they'd put him/her into the 7th grade class if they didn't have a 6th grade class for them.

I think you're right. My son took Algebra I in 6th grade at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill. Enough 6th graders in his class were ready for Algebra I so they created a class just for 6th graders (and also had Algebra I classes for the 7th and 8th grade students). And my step-daughter's friend took Algebra I in 6th grade (with mostly 7th graders) at Durham School of the Arts.

Chapel Hill does not list Algebra I as a standard 6th grade course - it's listed in their Course Book as a grade 7/8 course. As polarbear3 notes, it may be available on an exception basis.
