Hi all,
Finally settling in in the Apex area and was wondering where I should shop for groceries.Went to Harris Tetter today and they seem expensive compared to Market Basket back in Massachusettes. What is the trick here?Where do I go?
Try to use coupons and just look at the ad's in the paper to compare pricing. Have you looked at Trader Joe's, Kroger, Lowes Foods, Aldi, Target, Walmart or Fresh Market? You have tons of choices here. I shop at Trader Joe's and Harris teeter and find the pricing just fine when you shop with sales and coupons (At HT). Lots of Wholesale Clubs around here too.
I shop at Trader Joes, Aldi, Super Target, Walmart and BJs. I don't really even go into the "regular" grocery stores anymore. Between all of those I seem to be able to get everything I need for very reasonable prices.
I shop at Aldi, Super Walmart, Super Target, Trader Joe's, and I also receive a weekly produce box. Every once in awhile, I will stop in at Lowe's for certain items on sale. HT is pretty pricey, imo.
We shop at Kroger and pick up certain items at Harris Teeter, Trader Joes and Whole Foods.
Once you start shopping at multiple places you realize that no one place has the lowest prices for everything. I've found certain items at Harris Teeter that are more expensive or the same in Walmart. But in the end we seem to get the best value from Kroger but still shope at other places for certain items.
I agree on the best overall value from Kroger although I will say that Target always seems to adjust their ad prices if Kroger has something cheaper on sale that given week. We love Aldi's & they have great prices you can't beat and their food really is just as good as the other big grocery chains in many instances.
**Harris Teeter prices national brand products at 10-20 percent markup vs other stores...reason? To sell HT branded products at national brand price slots....
I've never been inside Lowes so maybe someone else can fill that in
Funny how different everyone's opinion is. I'm often surprised at how expensive some items are at Target. Just this weekend I noticed some guacamole at Target for $4.99 that I had purchased at Lowes for $2.49! Same exact product! When I bought processed food I found Lowes' regular prices to be generally higher than Harris Teeter, but I'd mostly shop sales anyhow.
Produce seems to be a whole different ballgame - in many cases you get what you pay for in freshness and quality. I find Fresh Market to have good prices on organic produce - usually the same brands as Whole Foods but less expensive.
Anyhow, your best bet is to check the sale circulars each week, or the store websites. I know the HT website lets you create a shopping list from the sales circular - I'd assume the others do as well. There are a lot of choices in the area and I think you really do have to hit up a couple different stores to get the best overall prices.

MY wife is a pretty careful shopper
she buys a lot of stuff at Costco and shops around for other needs elsewhere
HT when the coupons or offers are good
Trader joe ( Owned by one of the Aldi Brothers)
Wal Mart ( I know you risk running into 'people of walmart' but staples are CHEAP)
Aldi
Farmers market
and any other place that has offers e.g. Bruggers bagels has a bakers dozen bagels on wednesday for $5.99
