I always park at the carter Finley stadium lot. During the day it fills up front to back but there are always shuttles and the walk really isn't that bad given you'll be walking much further around the fairgrounds. Later in the afternoons and evenings the families leave and you find a lot of empty spots right up close. Easy peasy

The better question is: How far are you willing to walk? There is plenty of parking available, but at peak times you may end up parking a ways back in the lots, such that you have a decent walk to the fairgrounds or can take one of the shuttles. (In my experience, if a shuttle is there, great - take it. But it's a long wait to the next one and you might as well just walk.)

We usually get to the fair about 9am and get parking in the front.

I leave a couple hours early from work. All the mommies and kiddos are leaving and the young adults move in. A nice time to get a close spot. Normally the first Friday of the fair is a teachers workday in Wake County so a lot of the kiddos are there during the day.

I had no issues on Friday. Found parking easily at carter finley around 415 as young families were leaving. The fair was surprisingly not crowded at all!!
