You know, it is kind of funny after paying attention for awhile to all the negative media atttention that Durham gets and raleigh dosen't. I wonder why the media hates Durham so much? I say this because there have been at least 3 shootings in Raleigh in the last week and I have not heard the first thing about them on the news.

BTW, congrats on your new house amcjap!

Maybe you missed this in the article
Durham Mayor Tackles Crime During Address :: WRAL.com

"Bell also blamed part of the crime wave on a backlog of criminal paperwork.

That problem is "subpoenas being issued, but not being served. Warrants being issued, but not being served,” he said.

So far this month, Durham police have responded to two murders and 70 robberies. There was one murder and were 51 robberies in all of January last year.
"

How screwed up the town has to be for not serving subpoenas and warrants. That means the criminals are getting a free pass and do not go to jail. No wonder the crime in Durham (robberies and murder) so far is up 40% over January 2007 and there are still a few days left.

Thanks for specifying which part you were referencing. Yes, that's one of the things that has been acknowledged as a problem.

Sorry, you couldn't pay me enough to live in Durham. I know what I'm talking about because I grew up there and still have to frequent the town because I have family there (and they want out as well) Not every single part of Durham is bad but you have to drive through an awful lot of bad to get to the good.

So, you consider Southpoint to be a bad part of town? You only have to drive on 40 to get there. What about Brightleaf, which is right off of 147?

I will not argue that there are bad parts of town, but I never though that they were that hard to avoid.

To me it feels like no matter where I am in Durham, I'm only about a 1/2 mile away from a real bad area....

Well, that isn't my experience. I have to drive a number of miles away from homebefore I come across a neighborhood that feels bad or run-down.
