I took a table to Rice's Glass a couple of weeks ago and had then make a glass top for it. I have used them for my auto windshield repair for several years and they always do good work. They are in Carrboro though, which might not be that close for you. Anyway, if you don't find a closer recommendation then I would certainly recommend them.

There is a place on Lake Wheeler Road, right across from the entrance to Lake Wheeler called Raleigh Glass and Mirror Company. It looks like they don't have a website though. We've gotten many pieces from glass from them throughout the years and they've always done a good job. Our glass coffee table was broken a few years ago too and they made us a replacement piece the next day. I did take them a piece of our broken one so they could see the thickness.

I've used Action Glass of the Triangle, Apex, NC several times - prices seemed quite reasonable.

I work in commercial construction and have used Raleigh Glass and Action glass. Both are great companies and would be able to handle your glass no problem. REally any glass company should be able to.

You will have to give them the measurements or let them measure and they'll have to order the glass as it has to be cut first and then tempered. (this is why it shatters into little pieces instead of breaking into deadly shards) It should take a week or two to come in at most.

I broke the glass insert to my end table a few years ago, measured to the 32nd of an inch and took the measurements to a Home Depot. They cut and beveled the glass for a very reasonable price, (I think it was like $10 or $15), and only took one day. You could phone Lowes to see if they also provide this service, if they would be closer.

You might want to go the extra effort and cost to get tempered, but I matched the existing thickness of glass with standard non-tempered glass, and have used it for many years now and it has shown itself to be quite strong enough.

Using non tempered glass on a coffee table is like playing Russian roulette. Chances are you won't get hurt.

Don't do it.
