From Hillsborough to Danville it's a straight shot up NC86. From Greensboro it would be up US29. NC86 is rural two lane to the VA border - really not that bad a drive, with light traffic. US29 is highway. I drive the NC86 route several times a year from Chapel Hill (not too far from Hillsborough). It's about 45 minutes to the border - a bit further to Danville.

I have a friend that temporarily commuted from Danville to Durham. The ride took her a little more than an hour, and it wasn't too bad.

I would recommend Hillsborough over Mebane. Hillsborough seems to have more things to do, despite the fact that it is roughly the same size as Mebane.

I can't recommend any specific apartment complexes, but both areas are pretty safe. I don't know how they stack up to other small towns, though.

We're in Cary and my husband commutes to Danville. It takes him about 1 hr 15 minutes. Greensboro would definitely be closer, but maybe not as friendly for your career.

Are you looking to rent, or would you consider buying?
