Hi everyone! My wife and I are early in the process of trying to move to NC from Connecticut. Why, you ask? Well, a myriad of reasons, really. First my parents are moving to South Carolina and I'd like to be closer to them. My mother in-law is talking about moving further South, too. It's also a job thing.

I'm a chemist by trade, and having trouble finding decent work up here. After taking a year off from work to take care of my family, it took me 6 months just to get a temp job. 7 months there and no sign of a perm job yet. If online job postings are any indication, there's a lot more of my type of work in the RTP area alone than in all CT.

Finally, my wife is a teacher and not too happy with her current school (a lot of budget cuts recently and a new administration). And guess what state is currently recruiting out of state teachers? North Carolina!

Assuming I can actually get work down there, I'd like to already have an idea of where I can start looking for a place to live. I am looking for that seemingly rare combination of good schools and reasonable house prices (I'm thinking in the area of $180K for a 3br, 1400+ sq ft house). It would also need to be a reasonable commute to the Raleigh/Durham/RTP area, because I anticipate this as the most likely area I will find work. Also, I prefer suburbs to big cities, but that's not a deal breaker if there's a nice area in the city.

Now that I've bored you with the details, can anyone give me ideas of areas to start looking?

Thanks

Never been to CT, but I dont blame you one bit for wanting to move!

Hmmmm...for that price range, you really wont have any sort of trouble finding a house. North Raleigh has some really nice houses for that price and its about a 20 minute commute to RTP. Durham is another suggestion too.
I dont think you would find anything for that price in Cary..

I live in Clayton, which is about a 20 minute drive to Raleigh and a 45 min to 1 hr commute to RTP (which I drive everyday, really, its not that bad). I got a four bedroom (with huge master suite/master bathroom and his/hers walk in closet) with a two car garage, two & a half bath, formal dining and kitchen area for about 200k. Houses are a bit bigger with reasonable acre size out here in Johnston county. Schools rank higher than Wake county too. One of my neighbors worked as a teacher in Wake until she moved to Johnston and she likes the system out here better. I think she said it pays more but I would definately have your wife do some research on that first.

From Raleigh its about a 4 hour drive to Myrtle Beach, SC, a two hour drive to the coast of NC (Wilmington). Great location. From Johnston county, take about a half hour off of those times to give you an idea.

Good luck! Feel free to PM if you have any questions!

Default RTP area has the best schools

The best schools in RTP area are in Cary/Morrisville/Apex area. You can get what you are looking for in this area as what you are looking for is reasonable. I know couple of areas which you might like in this area as I am a realtor in this area. please feel free to contact me if you need more information

They do have some good schools....but...I am not sure they are 'the best'. Chapel Hill's certainly aren't slacking for example...and there are many high schools in Wake County that are just as good as Cary's.....some may even be better depending on the student.
