Unfortunately you posted about 2-3 weeks after a number of free community shredding/recycling events in Raleigh and Cary. There may be some coming up in the spring but the city of Raleigh officially only does it in mid-November. I would keep an eye out, especially starting in late March or early April, for upcoming events.
We bought a paper shredder for ~$30, and try to keep up with it as we go along. If get gets to be too much or we get behind, we also attend the "take it to your job" event.
Also, fireplaces work well. If you don't have one, maybe a friend or family member that you trust does?
Durham is now doing these once per quarter. Unfortunately you (and I!) missed the last event this past weekend (Sat. 1/22) -- but if you're on the Durham side keep an eye out....
I live outside the city limits, so I just throw it in a steel drum and stand around it like a hobo.
