..are they all pretty much the same, or are some better/worse than others? I know the Chapel Hill school district is excellent overall, but is there any breakdown within that? Since we're still looking for a place to live (with a Feb 1 start date!), we can choose based in part on the local elementary school. Are there any that are more or less desirable? Thanks!

I've heard that Seawell is the best one according to all my friends, but I didn't go to Elementary here. I went there a couple of times though. The layout reminded me of an adolescent prison...I've heard nothing bad about the teachers though

It's difficult for parents to give broad comparative information about elementary schools, as most have experienced just one or two within the district.

If you research you will find general statistical data about the schools, and you'll find that some on average have higher scores, or better passing/progress rates, than others. Often, the differences are attributable to to the populations served by each schools - as in most places less affluent or minority populations tend to do less well.

The real issue, though, isn't about the averages - it's about your kid. And I'm willing to bet there's not a huge amount of difference for your kid from one school to the next. Any of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro elementary schools will serve them well.
