Years ago, Sadlack's Heros on Hillsborough St. made a great sub - not sure if its the same ownership, etc, so don't know if they're still good, but the Dr. Franks Special was yummy. And I like the Italian sub at Village Deli too.

I haven't had a great sub since Bull City Subs* (Formerly known as Sub Way, note... two separate words but the chain had a fit) on Main street in Durham closed.

Back in my Durham High days we spent many a day while skipping... errr uhhh having an off campus lunch there.

Oh yes! I remember the good old days at Sadlack's. The Dr. Frank was indeed good. I also was a big fan of The Super Sprout.

After reading this post I went immediately to Subconcious. Overall it was a good sub, but not enough to draw me back again.

Keep this thread alive, I love a good sub!

If your up for a drive, Long Johns in Morristown NJ is the best! lol

I'll second Cheerz behind Sheetz on Miami in Durham.

I also really like JJ's Deli in Chapel Hill in Timberlyne Shopping Center.

Ive eatin many Harris Teeter subs. Good value for a better than subway sub. A good place to grab lunch while working. Not to many places you can get a sub and drink for less than 5 bucks.

My two worst? Quiznos and Firehouse.

Rudinos, subconscious, etc....not real subs. I know exactly what the OP is looking for and i haven't found it here either.

Its not just about piling meat on, the most important aspect is the bread....and frankly the bread around here sucks.

Maybe I"m missing something but I grew up in New York City and have tried subs from all over the place and quite honestly think that Jersey Mike's does a really good job of it. I know the OP dismissed all chains but I've tried 'em all and I've tried a bunch of local shops and think that what I've eaten from Jersey Mike's holds up well under scrutiny.

American Hero on N. Roxboro St. in Durham has great subs. It's a family owned place. They slice the meat in cheese when they make your sub and everything is very fresh. The bread is really good too. My favorite used to be their Italian sub.

Capis' subs are good for the value. There is also a location at the corner of Chapel Rd. and Airport Blvd in Morrisville. My favorite is the seafood, but I only get it on the days when it's chunky. The bread is really good their too.
