Unhappy Wake County/32% Property Tax/2008

We read recently in the "Observer Newspaper/Wake County" that property taxes in 2008 would rise 16% for homes $185,000 and under and 32% hike for homes over $185,000. Dissappointing as it seems, the big city folks are moving there to avoid the big Taxes; there's no escaping it where ever any of us move, it all catches up to us

Do you have a link to that story? And if 16% is off a low base that is not really much as NC has low property taxes compared to many other places - but if its 16% every year than its going to catch up quick - versus a 1x adjustment. 32% is pretty steep... I guess I will go shopping for that $184,999.99 house

If I read the same article it is an idea, nothing yet has been determined, the article states they used to lower the tax rate to compensate for the rise in the price of a home and they are considering no longer doing this, they are also considering re-assessing more often.
Here is the link that I read-

Good, we probably just skipped all the jargon and went for the bottom line, considering the 16-32% hike. I don't know how the State of NC operates, but in FL when we moved to the central part last year, we resided in our new home for approximately 2 months and then WHAM all of us got hit with a 23% property tax hike, we all fought it with these commissioner's but guess who won out....we the little people have to pay....by the way, 4 of the 5 commissioners are no longer running for office this year, go figure....they would never have gotten our vote after what they did to us and on top of that, this is a retirement community, NO KIDS and we still got hammered...

I live in FL (central part of the state. Leesburg). My taxes on a $315,000 house in 07 will be $5,200. When I built it this year I missed or didn't understand that property is taxed at "fair market value". Those words mean the cost of the house. It can also go up every year with a yearly cap of 3%.

House is on the market and I will be moving to NC. Franklin if I can get my wife to agree or somewhere in the Raleigh area.

I am retired military and collect Social Security. In NC that would mean no state income tax for me.

WOW !!!!

The grass isnt alwasy greener, huh?

Im guessing this is going to occur in most major counties in NC.

Seems like many of us are running away from problems just to have them in a few years somewhere else.
