So, I am thinking Wake Forest, but still want to check out Fuquay-Varina, Apex, and Clayton. I know that Clayton is a bit more out there but how long would the drive Raleigh generally take?
Let me also ask, What are some family oriented activities commin in the area?

Our first trip down here we drove from Chapel Hill to Clayton with stops in Morrisville, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs and Fuquay Varina in between. We quickly figured out what area would be best for commuting to RTP.
We live in Clayton and it's about 25 mins to downtown Raleigh, and 35-45 minutes to North Raleigh, Cary etc. It depends on what you will be commuting for. I think a half hour commute for work is fine, but if you also want to go to Raleigh for everything like shopping, restaurants, doctors, the mall etc. the trip can be annoying. The houses are big and cheap in Clayton. It's safe, the schools are good, and if you live close enough to Garner you can use their parks and library which are infinitely better than Clayton's. We needed to live south of Raleigh for our commute (Ft. Bragg) and every time I drive around North Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Cary and see the better stores, restaurants and activities it makes me wish we could have moved to one of those places.
Thanks for the input! We currently live in Staten Island which in Traffic is an almost 1 hour drive to manhattan. 30 minutes is a dream for us! haha. However, we are alslo looking into Apex and Wake Forest.
Our trip begins in 2 weeks. I am looking into many areas. HAFNYNC are you originally from NY?
The pace of life is slow here and you may not like it. Ignore what you hear on TV, public schools are good. Especially schools in western wake. There are cut-backs so you will find it hard to get a teaching job. I know civil service salaries are not like NY/NJ...So your husband will have a pay cut if he joins a police force. I know my dad was a Jersey City Fire Captain. No one makes that kind of money for the state of NC!!! When your kids are on spring break...come down and really check it out. Some ex-new yorkers don’t like the pace down here. So check before you buy. I am an ex-jersey girl and I love it here. I never thought I would!
Question for the locals ... What are your opinions on the Raleigh area?
Very suburbia. Sometimes boring. People are nice in a helpful sort of way. Never thought I would love public schools for my daughter but I do. It is hard to make friends. Love the shopping!!!!!!
We are actually looking forward to the slower paced life. We vacation all through the South and LOVE IT! I also have family in SC and I swear those little girls are so polite, you do not find much of that here in NY. I also refer to my elders as Sir & Ma'am and get the strangest looks here, but it is about respect and courtesy. We are not those people trying to make "Little NY" in NC. We are looking forward to the type of quality of life the area offers.
We are coming in 2 weeks to sent up our rental.
We are moving in March! It is official!
We are so excited, but also nervous.
