When my MIL died last October and we needed quick tickets to NW AR, it was $500 PER ticket cheaper to fly out of Charlotte. With the difference being $1000 for the 2 of us we definitely did it. The morning drive there wasn't bad at all, but the next day we returned to CLT at 11:30 pm. LONG drive back home after a long day; still, it WAS $1000.

However, I just checked on tickets for me to fly to LR, AR, and there was only a small difference between the two. Granted, I wasn't looking at flying in 2 days time.

I have a friend who lives in CA. She visits family near Holden Beach each year and usually flies in/out of CLT because it's cheaper than flying via RDU.

Heck yes! To Florida. We also stayed in a hotel with a free shuttle to the airport and free parking for the week we were gone! I'd totally do that again!
ETA: But to NRG's point, you do sort of have to be a little more flexible with your travel plans.

Greensboro will have fewer options than Raleigh. In my experience, you just have to suck it up and take a connecting flight. Try Delta through Atlanta - I did that last month to Jamaica and it worked out fairly well (Atlanta ice storm notwithstanding).

RDU connections in Charlotte really used to get on my nerves. It seemed like a useless hassle and such a waste of time, resources, money etc. Only thing more ridiculous was the time we had to connect in JFK from RDU to fly to PBI (that's Palm Beach International in Florida!)

I've known people to fly out of Greensboro driving from Raleigh, Charlotte is twice as far though.

It's also that Charlotte is a hub city, while RDU currently does not serve as a hub for any city. I think the combined Raleigh-Wake and Durham-Orange MSA's have around 2 million people, but there just isn't enough travel to justify more flights.

RDU used to be a hub, back with Midway Airlines, but it's been 12 or so years before they went belly up.
