What is with the ties to local gvts? someone explain plz
After seeing some articles in newspapers when questioned on safety, it just seemed to me that the county was backing them too quickly without enough investigation. Nothing really big just my perspective.
Shearon Harris is owned by Progress Energy. In addition to the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, its executives serve on a number of local councils and boards. In addition, a couple of people from NCSU and UNC are on the Progress Energy board.
The point is that they are very "tied in" to the local community and government, which is not uncommon for a large company but can also cloud judgement when it comes to making decisions.
Someone on here poiinted out the "evacutaion route signs" I dont think I noticed them before that! Makes me a little nervous since I barely know my way around, even with GPS . The paper said the evacuationroute includes residents within a 10 mile radius. The news and observer quoted a former orange county emergency official with saying there is doubt about the evacutaion plans to deal with a radioactive leak, and that he feared law enforcement personal may drive to pick up their own families and "get the heck out of dodge" Apprently Progress energy is trying to get the plants license extended through 2046.
Interestingly that at the last public meeting concerning fire protection co-sponsored by State Senator Janet Cowell only 40 individuals showed up. Since Wake County alone has over 700,000 residents that's not much of a turnout. Seems to me most people don't share your concern about Shearon Harris or maybe Progress has "ties" to the entire metro population.
If it weren't for the cheap and clean nuclear energy we enjoy, we would not have all the industry, great jobs and high quality of life in the Triangle.
That being said, I just read that cancer rates are up in the area.
I go boating on Harris Lake all the time though, and it doesn't bother me. I'm pretty sure the solar radiation is much worse for me than anything the power plant is throwing out.

Not alot of press on it for many to know to attend
Let's see - it's on the local news and in the newspaper. Certainly covered in the Independent. Not sure how much more press it would need - maybe Progress has "ties" to the local media as well.
