Where do you plan to move?

I've lived in about 6 states and love Raleigh, but it's not for everyone.

Good luck.
Thanks! Potentially back to Florida, if I stay with this job and telecommute...but after working tonight on silliness I'm tempted to head back to NYC and a new start in a completely different field!

I was thinking of Hillsborough though...lease is up in 2 months, not sure of what to do

Under different circumstances (married, kids) I'd probably stay here.

Once I decided to move here from Seattle, I had to wait 2 years due to commitments. It was a long wait, but now that I am finally here, it was well worth it! We love it here.

WOW! I can not believe how many people are in our same situation. My husband and myself along with our 2 children have been trying to relocate for over a year and a half now! Once we made the decision to move we thought everything would happen much quicker..... Things have not! we have had our house on the market in bay area California for 16 months and are still trying. My husband has flown out several times for job interviews and just when we think he has landed a job it doesn't happen.
There have been many a tears in our house. But on that note we know that it is not a matter of IF we move it is a matter of WHEN! All of the wonderful things that we have all grown to love about this beautiful state will still be there when each of us makes our moves.
Good luck to everyone!

Lain

I've been waiting for over 2 years, in fact was supposed to move down this past August had a place lined up and my husbands job fell through. Times are tough, I think we'll be waiting another year or so before making the move.

We lived in Manhattan 10 years (rent stabilized on the lower East side). The rents are way up when apts decontrol. The 2 BR we rented for $550 in 1985 now runs $3,500 market rate.

The convenience of NYC is unmatched, but be sure the taxes and rents work with your budget.

My late mom lived in the area known as Alphabet City, which was bad beyond belief. The area has gentrified with ultra high rents.

Good luck whatever you decide, scorp.

Scorp, just out of curiousity, why do you want to move away (if you don't mind my asking)?

It’s ironic really that a place so crowded ends up feeling so lonely.

May God bless you on your journey and may he also grant you a speedy return to Raleigh.
Wow. I didn't realize DC was so awful. Guess I've been delusional all this time.

You'll be fine in MD Terracota. The traffic does stink, but I don't think you'll have to resort to drugs to cope with it.

As for being a transient population, that cuts both ways. There are many people in your same situation looking to meet others. You just have to find them. You'll find that there are a lot of great neighborhoods in the MD/DC area. And, there are tons of great dining and cultural options. Good luck!

It’s very much an issue of were you live around the DC area. For example, Montgomery County Maryland near Potomac has much less crime than Capital Heights in Prince Georges County but the price of living in the better areas are prohibitively expensive. A quick check of the Maryland forum will reveal that even a house in the ghetto usually cost upwards of 200,000. Homes in better areas easily reach the half million dollar mark with 600k being the norm for a large portion of the metropolitan area. Unless you’ve lived in Maryland since before the housing boom you’re probably going to have a tough time finding affordable housing.

Simply stated, when all factors are considered the quality of life here in Wake County, NC is generally better than the DC area. Why do you think so many people are desperate to move here?

Then there’s the traffic, The Beltway and 270 are horrendous during rush hour and that’s even with the Metro that alleviates the road congestion to a certain extent. I recall many a time being stuck in standstill traffic for almost an hour at the 95/495 split and there wasn’t even car accident or road debris holding up traffic. The whole commute thing was so miserable in Maryland that I’m getting upset just thinking about it.

Default raleigh

I last wrote in this thread a year ago, and as I was reading over everything I realized how much things have changed in one year. Back in July of 2007, I was sure we would be in NC by now. I had requested all the letters of reference an started my paperwork to transfer my professional license from NY to NC. In the last year I came to grips with the fact that my husband just would not find a comparable job (or pay) in the triangle and that perhaps our fate was destined to staying in NY (for now).
With that decided we started looking for a home in December, here in NY. It was tough, I thought it might never happen ( a house that would be agreable to both our tastes and wallets). Well, finally we did find one, closed, and moved in this past May. We are about 50 miles north of manhattan in Orange county, NY so my husband can keep his job. He has adjusted to doing the commute and feels its worth it to finally be a homeowner.
Even I am happy with the move. It may not be NC, but its a start. Who knows, perhaps once the real estate slump passes and my home appreciates we can finally go, but for now, its great. It's not easy and sometimes these things take time. I suppose now that I reflect on it, it works out the way it is supposed to. Good luck to everyone on their plans, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work out. You may be pleasantly surprised even if you are not where you thought you might be, as I am.
