I'm looking for a family doctor and a cardiologist, both in Raleigh.

For each of these, I'd prefer a doctor who is strong in traditional medicine and who also combines these traditional medical therapies with lifestyle management to prevent and reverse disease, such as heart disease and diabetes.

If you know of excellent family doctors and cardiologists in Raleigh, even if they don't have a strong focus on prevention and reversal of disease, please let me know.

While I'm considering doctors located anywhere in Raleigh, if I had my druthers for their location, I would choose first near Duke Raleigh on Wake Forest, second near Rex on Lake Boone Trail, and third near Wake Med on New Bern or WakeMed North on Falls of the Neuse.

Thought I would add that my primary insurance is Medicare. I'm finding that some practices are not currently accepting new medicare or medicaid patients (this was recently discussed on a thread at this site), including Blue Ridge Family Physicians. I think this also is true of Raleigh Family Practice (the one near Rex on Lake Boone), but their site seems to be down right now and I can't double-check.

If you recommend a doctor, I'll be glad to check to see whether he/she accepts new medicare patients.

If you're not partial to one hospital system or the other, I got a great specialist recommendation from WakeMed's "doctor choice" service. You can search the database per specialty, insurances accepted, etc., but you can also call the phone number to reach a live person. When I got my recommendation, the woman I talked to was extremely helpful.

Thanks, tennisgal82, I didn't know about this service by WakeMed. I'll check to see whether Duke Raleigh and Rex have similar services. I really like all three major hospitals in Raleigh.

Dr. P.M. Shah at Cary Cardiology literally saved my dad's life in 1981. Because of his good care, we had my dad for many more years than we thought we would. (He even grieved with us at the funeral.) I would recommend any of the doctors in his practice.

Thanks, rabbitsong. I'm limiting my search to Raleigh, but I'm glad you has such a good experience with Dr. Shah and posted it. Other people may use your information - I know I searched before posting and others likely will do that too.

Yes, Duke does have a physician referral service Find a Physician - DukeHealth.org but for what you need you should search for Primary Care or Internal Medicine, and also UNC has a Find a Doc service UNC - Find A Doctor. This is the norm with large medical organizations now.
