My wife and I will likely be moving to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary area in Spring of 2008 with 2 children under the age of 11. Could you who live in the area comment on what areas are more friendly and accepting of transplants from the north with housing that is $400,000 or less in price? I know from experience there are areas in Minneapolis/Saint Paul that are transplant friendly and others that are not.
Thanks.

I think you will not have a problem almost anywhere in the Triangle.
Now if you go into a rural area, in a location where you are basically buying into a family compound, you may have to be very patient.

If you assimilate with pleasure, you will not have a problem.
If you forego opportunity to lecture at length about all the things that were better where you came from, you will avoid many problems.
If you recognize and heed the old sales bromide, "You were given two ears and just one mouth. Use them in that proportion," you will do well.

Respect breeds respect. Interest spawns interest. Caring begets caring.
It isn't that hard.

I'm a native of NC but lived in St. Paul for almost 10 years. I think it is night and day between here and there. While I like St. Paul it was the most transplant unfriendly place I've ever been, and I've lived in a number of other cities. I always attributed it to the fact that there were so few transplants there so people just didn't realize what it was like to be new. In this area there are so many transplants that you'd be hard pressed to find a neighborhood that *didn't* have a lot of folks who are new in town and are willing to share their experiences. I can completely see how Minnesota would make you nervous of being new in town, but honestly here I think any neighborhood would be welcoming.
