Go to amazon.com.
I buy everything from there.
You can do lots of research and get tons of reviews.
And they ALWAYS have the lowest prices.

Peace Camera is a good place if you want to talk to a knowledgeable person about a camera. Their prices will probably be higher than online, but who knows - maybe you can talk them down in price a little. Couldn't hurt to ask.

I'd recommend Southeastern Camera.

I'll second (or third) Peace Camera. Even if you don't buy from there, the guys are perfectly willing to show you different models and suggest things that are right for you. They don't try to pressure you into buying something more than you need. Plus they're actual photographers, so they really know their stuff. They talked me out of buying a more expensive lens for my Nikon and sold me an even nicer, lower priced lens with better features by a secondary brand. Saved me about $150. They also buy and sell used equipment, so if you have something lying around that you'd like to trade in for credit, it could cut down your price.

Unless you've had a DSLR (at least I assume you're looking for digital) before you should really visit a store and hold the camera in your hands. Virtually any Canon or Nikon will be comparable features-wise, but they have slight differences in body styles and ergonomics that can really make the camera a pleasure to use. Sony and Olympus also make good models.

I bought my Nikon D3000 on Amazon.com. I researched forever to find one that would be a good transition camera from someone who had only owned a point and shoot. It has an auto mode, so you can start right away. I also recommend getting the "_____ for Dummies" for whatever camera you choose. Check it out in the store but do price comparisons on froogle.com. I almost always find that amazon is cheaper.

I third/fourth either Peace Camera, or the Wolf camera at Cameron Village. I know you can get cheaper on amazon/walmart, etc. But if you want people who really know how to use cameras to show you the best one to buy FOR YOU then these are your best two options. You may pay a bit more, but you will ge the right camera and it will be worth it in the long run.

And please DO NOT go to one of these places and get all the service, then go and buy it online. That is just rude, and mean, and taking advantage of our great local businesses that are actually providing a service to their customers.

Another vote for Peace Camera. It is absolutely worth spending a tad more money to keep a local camera store in business. Nothing beats being to walk in and play around with different items, talk to a knowledgeable salesperson, and having a place that will help you out in a pinch. The latter might not mean much to you as a hobbyist, but ask local pros who have had an issue with some gear just before a commercial shoot or wedding.

How did you get the bug for an SLR? I used several over the years back in the day of film and having to be selective in what you shot. I have boxes of slides with grand old memories, but all the prints have faded away. It is the nature of film. I had a darkroom and a big collection of lenses, flashes, and tripods.
Today I have a small zoom camera , 12 Megapixels, with the capacity for over 3000 pictures and it shoots video at 1024 wide HD.
I believe an elaborate camera is an expensive necklace for a beginner. You do not learn to drive in a Corvette, you get an old sedan, then decide what you would like to have from there.
$200 or so will get you a great digital camera which slips in your pocket and does not get in the way of enjoying your vacation.
Work on the hobby after you get back.
