It seems that we are starting to make some other, not-so-desirable, magazine lists. TIME points out the local growth of suburban sprawl in this article where a group of CEOs called Raleigh "one of the worst commuting cities in America".

Or Atlanta, DC, San Diego, San Francisco, LA, etc, etc.

Hmmm. So we're going to legislate through a Comprehensive Plan where we think people should live and call that progress?
From the experts who think Raleigh has one of the worst commutes in America?

Really?

Have you lived in any of those cities? Or any large city?

They have what Raleigh doesn't - dependable, integrated public transit.

If you want to work in Raleigh, you have no choice but to drive.

And with more and more people moving here and no progress on public transit, the problem is only going to get worse (it's not bad now, but I don't want to be here in 5 or 10 years!)

I'm fine with us not always making the "best" lists. Less people flocking here in droves before we have any sort of reliable means to get any of them from Point A to Point B.

Articles such as this miss one of the key points of a place like the Triangle: there is no central place to which people commute. The closest would be RTP, which is one of the reasons you see what cities like Raleigh call "sprawl". For many, it really means living closer to where they work, which is not in the downtown corridor areas.

I grew up in Atlanta, and my sister still lives there. Yes, there is a reliable mass-transit system. Few people use it, though, and more have opted to farther from the downtown area.

Er, I don't think anyone is legislating where you should or should not live. It's just a matter of using our brains a bit more to help Raleigh develop in a more sustainable way rather than letting it turn into another Atlanta or LA.

And that bad commute you mention is the result of no planning at all. It's the result of the laissez faire approach to development. Raleigh has only recently started putting some thought into this.

There is a viable solution: build "RTP" 2.0 on the eastern side of the triangle between say knightdale and clayton. Mass transit is not a good fit for the triangle as we lack a true central area where a majority of the population congregates for work. By encouraging another "RTP" to the east, that could vastly cut the number of people taking long commutes by giving those that moved out there to save money, a closer place to work. This would also increase property values and prosperity in those areas. We honestly do not have the where-with-all to build an elaborate mass transit system anyway, but by encouraging business (other than the Pharma corps that are out there already) to build in that area, we can take a bite out of the problem at little cost.
