My brother tried to gift a good ADC map to me and couldn't find one. We are wondering if they are harder to find than they used to be because we are all using GPS. I LOVE my GPS!

BUt I find I like to look at where I'm going before I get in the car.

The bookstores usually carry them but u can also check some gas stations, Sams Club, etc. Look for the one that has Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

That company was bought out by Universal Map, and distribution broke down. They are STARTING to get them back out again - I think I've seen the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill (and the Charlotte/Meck) map book at B&N, and Universal's website showed updated Raleigh, Durham/Chapel Hill, Rocky Mount, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point/Lex/Thomasville, Rock Hill, Hilton Head and a Lynchburg/Danville/Martinsville all as being in print and available. They haven't done a good job of getting them into stores (they had a contract arrangement with Borders, who just went down the tubes, which doesn't help), but those green titles are new titles they've never published before, and allegedly the big metro map books - Triangle, Triad, Charlotte are to be greatly updated and expanded, so they're on the way.

Your Realtor should have maps. Even with GPS, I find that many of my clients still like a map, which gives you an overall view. I understand that...although I don't read maps that well!!!

I've used and really liked the ADC map books, and if they're not available, I'd suggest joining the AAA.
They have the best 'regular' maps I've ever seen,
iF you can handle maps that fold <grin>

I agree that maps are (very unfortunately) going the way of the buggy whip as people all use GPS (and consequently, will all lose their sense of direction). Bookstores do still have them--Borders will be going out of business soon and you might catch them at a deep discount. Also bookstores can special-order any book, including map books, you need. I like Independent stores such as Books at Quail Ridge (which is not in fact at Quail Ridge but at Ridgewood) for general book shopping or special ordering.

Oh, gosh, this is an older post that got resurrected...I actually found an ADC map book...in ex husband's bookshelf. He had never used it. Once I got the hang of the place, I don't use it either!

I think he said he got it at Barnes and Noble.

Francois, you are right about the GPS making us too dependent. Fortunately I do have a good sense of direction. Often when I get home I open an actual map and figure out where I went and what I could have done differently. I've found at least 10 different ways to get to work and try a new one everytime 40 gets backed up---I just jump on the exit ramp and figure something out. I guess I'm a geek that way. One thing I miss about being married...having (or being) a navigator. I'm trying to train my 14 year old, but she loses interest and takes texting breaks and then doesn't know where we are....

I use to carry around a map always, so that anywhere in the city I could look to see what the best way to get to some other part. But while I still carry some maps in my car's door pocket, I've not used them in several years as the GPS does that so well.

And now my current GPS is certainly the last one of those I'll get, as my smartphone has Google Maps on it, with Navigation. It's free, the maps are the most current I have access to and it has traffic info.

Also, I can easily add many, many Points of Interest while on the web gMap, that is then readable on my phone. IE: I have all the Targets / Walmarts / K Marts on one gMap page, that I can then pull up on my phone. So anywhere in the city, I can ask it to send me to the nearest one of that type of store. (Better than just being directed to the nearest Walmart or nearest Kmart, etc). I've also made a page of all the used book stores, a page of all the big shopping malls, etc. So it's become much more useful than any map, and even my GPS.

For newcomers...often you can pick up a free map from a city's Convention and Visitors Bureau. Some will mail you a welcome type package.
