So, fellow Durhamites, the family & I are considering moving to North/North of Durham in the next year. One of the deciding factors of when/if is the schools for our children. Any feedback on Eno Valley Elementary would be much, much appreciated. Any parents out there with children who are or have gone there especially I would love to hear from. I have researched them on greatschools.org but would love to hear firsthand...how are the facilities, the teachers, the other children, etc. I know Carrington Middle School has a great reputation...if anyone would like to add to my knowledge about them that would be great as well.

We would be living near the schools as well...anyone out there who lives in or near that area that has any particular do's or don'ts to offer up would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance!

I know you are probably looking for 1st hand experience, but Eno Valley has the reputation of going downhill over the last few years and some families I know actively have avoided it. The other elementary schools in north durham are excellent: Mangum usually has the highest test scores in the district (not that test scores mean everything), I know happy families at Little River, and my child is at Easley year-round, which we are very happy with.

Students from Eno Valley are able to lottery into Easley if there is room - I know a number of Easley children who are from the Eno Valley zone (we lotteried in from the Hillandale Zone - Hillandale is also a good school, but we wanted the year round calendar). There's also a brand new arts magnet school opening this Fall in North Durham called Sandy Ridge, and students from Eno Valley and several other North Durham schools have priority over others in Durham for it.

That's all to say that there are other choices if you don't find Eno Valley to your liking, but you can't be certain that you'd get a spot, at least not at the Kindergarten year. One can apply for schools every year, so it's not like an all or nothing proposition. Hopefully someone will chime in with some first hand experience. If you're local, your best bet would be to visit the school, take a tour, and get a feel for it that way. Best of luck.

Everything Jill said. I prefer Easley, Little River, and Mangum. I've only heard great things about Carrington. We are districted for Northern High, but will hopefully try to get into a different school when we get to that point. Chewning Middle has a new principal and they have high hopes for Chewning, but I would avoid it as well.

Thanks for the input. The Strong Durham Schools was a lot like Great Schools...good reviews but 2 or 3 is not exactly a lot of information.
I keep getting mixed messages about the quality of the school so I am not sure what to think but now know I need to go see for myself. Thanks for the advice folks!
