Does anyone know of any local businesses that sell refurbished laptops? Also some sort of warranty would be nice. My children are doing an internet based curriculum and I want them to have their own no frills laptop in which to do their schoolwork. All they need is the internet connection.

Also, I was wondering if (hopefully) the same type of business would buy used laptops and repair them for resale. I posted before about the screen damage to my netbook and was thinking some company might buy it from me, fix the screen and resell it.

Any leads would be much appreciated.

I volunteer at Kramden in Durham, which refurbishes donated computers for children. In addition to donating thousands of computers a year, they also support the organization by selling laptops (and desktops) for VERY reasonable prices. They're obviously not cutting-edge machines but they come loaded with at least a P4, 1GB of RAM, XP, Firefox, and OpenOfffice and are fully supported if there is a problem. I'm not sure if I can link there, but search Google for Kramden.

Default Tiger Direct?

Their web site lists hundreds of refurbished laptops. They have an outlet on Capital (IIRC) in Raleigh and also in Durham, and have service reps working there, I think.

Low prices, warranty, and local service.

If you know anyone who works at IBM, they have access to employee purchase of refurb laptops. You can get a T60 for around $200-250 with limited warranty right now. Good specs.

Thanks so much for the leads everyone.

I actually donated an old monitor to Kramden before, but I didn't know they sold their equipment. I thought they just donated them. I'll have to check that out!

I just wanted to update this thread with what I did. I was able to purchase two nice laptops for my daughters from Kramden well within my price range ($100 for one and $90 at a discount for minor cosmetic flaw). Thanks again!

They changed the names of the brick-and-mortar locations to "COMP USA".
