I live in Cary, approx 1/2 mile east of Kildare Farm Road and Ten-Ten--and I have the first iPhone, 16MB, working on AT&T. The phone works great in Chicago and so-so at home. So my contract was up in January and I have just switched to Verizon. Reason: the iPhone really slowed down, due to the improved operating system. So I was ready for a new phone. The big deal is that Verizon has cell phone antenna at Plumtree--which is 1/4 mile from my house. Call Verizon and they can tell you the cell tower locations. I agree with others that Verizon has the best coverage in North Carolina. My son-in-law is a telecon attorney and advises that Verizon is the best in the country. So now I am a Verizon customer.
My opinion is AT&T and Verizon are about the same. Both are good. I have AT&T, a good friend has Verizon and agree both have the same "issues"with dropped calls in certain areas and bad service in some neighborhoods. My daughter had Sprint and said it was horrible. Everyone with AT&T will say AT&T is better and Verizon customers will say the same about Verizon.
